Real User Monitoring

To manage performance with business acumen

You know that performance has an impact on business (it’s not anymore to demonstrate) but you don’t know how it impacts your business in your context. Real User Monitoring does that for you.

How does it work?

Real User Monitoring (RUM) is the capture of the speed of every single visit on your website, in their own context (location, OS, device, type of connection, etc), correlated with their behavior and the revenue from their visits. A simple tag in your code allows to collect these information from the browser of your users.

Real User Monitoring answers 3 questions:

What is the speed experienced by my real users?

How fast should my website be?

How do I improve the speed?

What is the speed experienced by my real users, at present moment and in the past?

Maybe you made a change on the website, but it doesn’t improve the performance on a particular browser; maybe some images don’t load quickly enough on some mobile devices; maybe some third parties delay the page display for users having a slow connection.
With RUM, you know what your users get in the reality and in real time: the page load, time to display the main useful content for the user, time to display a particular element, etc. This, for any segment of user. You know which users segment have a bad performance and if the problem lies at his side or must be fixed on your website.

How fast should my website be?

With other words “how do I know how my revenue will grow in function of the speed”?
The big added value proposed with our partner Akamai (with the solution mPulse) for those who make money through their website (being through e-commerce, advertising, ads posting or other online services), is the link between the speed experienced by the visitors and your business:
  • You know for the visits which had a speed of X, how the users behaved and how your business was impacted: session length, session duration, bounce rate, conversion rate, revenue.
  • Thanks to Data Intelligence forecasting you know how to prioritize speed improvement actions based on the real visits:
    • How is the revenue and user behavior impacted if I would improve the speed of 1 sec of a page or a functionality?
    • Which page is the most important to speed up to improve the conversion rate?

How do I improve the speed?

Steve Souders, Google’s Head Performance Engineer, declared: “80-90% of the end-user response time is spent on the front-end. Start Here”.  With RUM you get speed metrics collected on your user browser with the users context and his actions, enabling to detect:
  • Precisely where time is lost on the Front-End
  • Errors in real time to react immediately and accurately – your developers and helpdesk will love it
  • Incompatibilities with a particular Operating Systems, functionality, page,…
  • Which Third Parties are impacting the most your users experience
